Fueling My Passion for Our Mission:
Takeaways from the 2025 Best Friends National Conference
By Kyle Kirschner, Pilots To The Rescue Board Member
Last week, Michael Schneider and I had the privilege of attending the Best Friends National Conference in Palm Springs, California. As a board member of Pilots To The Rescue, this was my first time at this influential event. And I can confidently say, I returned more energized than ever to do my part to make the world a better place for animals.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear this conference was a hub of passion and dedication. Michael and I connected with fellow animal welfare advocates, shelter leaders and innovative companies, all united by a common goal: to #SaveThemAll.
One of the highlights for me was meeting Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society. Her humility and genuine interest in the mission of Pilots To The Rescue was truly inspiring. It was a powerful reminder of the impact collaborative efforts can have on animal welfare.
The conference was a whirlwind of insightful conversations and meaningful connections. Reconnecting with our valued partners and sponsors including John Hussey, CEO & Founder of CUDDLY and his son James Hussey, reinforced the strength of our community and the importance of our life-saving missions.
My Key Takeaways and Inspirations:
-
Government Involvement: I was genuinely surprised by the number of states that have enacted no-kill shelter legislation. It highlighted the significant role local and state governments play in protecting animal lives.
-
Progress and the Path Forward: The progress in reducing shelter euthanasia is remarkable. From 5,000 daily deaths in 2016 to 900 today—while still 900 too many—it underscores the impact of collective action.
-
The Power of Community: The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly meeting so many passionate individuals, all dedicated to the well-being of animals.
Advice for Future Attendees:
If you're considering attending next year’s Best Friends conference, my advice is simple: meet as many people as you can and bring an open mind. You never know what valuable insights or partnerships await. Learning from others' successes and challenges in the movement is crucial, and strong relationships are the foundation of our collective mission to save animals.
The Best Friends National Conference reinforced the importance of collaboration and innovation in animal rescue. At Pilots The Rescue, we're committed to leveraging these insights to further our mission and expand our impact.
Michael and I left Palm Springs with renewed determination and a strengthened network. We are excited to see what the future holds for animal welfare and how Pilots To The Rescue will continue to be part of the solution.
